Saturday, January 31 – Joyful Stitching
9 am to noon – Erin Lee Gafill | Melanie Falick
A painting begins from a seed of an idea, the sight of the sun rising over mountains against a lilac sky, perhaps. The silhouette of trees against the bright light of sky and water. Light on a path, turning.
A quilt may begin with three fabric scraps that fell on top of one another in a certain way and something inside of me went “aaaaah!”
I found the seed of a quilt I began months ago and am hoping to finish today, the few pieces that launched it all stuffed in a bag hanging on a door to the attic.
Ah ha!!! I said when I found them. THAT is how it began, and THIS is how it will end.
The seed may hold the entire story – palette – vibe.
And it may be abandoned entirely, along the way yet have served a great purpose of energizing a beginning.
My work relies deeply on intuition.

In this new workshop, Erin Lee Gafill and Melanie Falick will teach a super-easy, joyful method for hand-stitching an improvisational-style quilt using scrap fabric and simple straight stitches. No skills, no measuring, no previous experience required! (read full class description)
Saturday, January 31 – Color Duets
2 – 3 pm – Lecture & Slide Show

“Internationally renowned textile designer Kaffe Fassett and his niece, award-winning artist Erin Lee Gafill, announce Color Duets, a book in celebration of a years-long collaboration and an upcoming exhibition at the Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey, California. Featuring dozens of crisp, gorgeous photographs, Color Duets highlights paintings, textiles, and personal stories from the two artists’ lives and shared history. The book focuses in particular on the paired still lifes that have resulted from over 12 years of annual retreats, during which London-based Kaffe returns to his roots in Big Sur, California, to paint alongside Erin. Color Duets is available as of June 15, 2020. Order” today at www.colorduets.com.”
Kaffe Fassett’s impact on the world of knitting is unparalleled. For his niece, award-winning California artist Erin Lee Gafill, Kaffe was also her earliest artistic inspiration, mentor, and occasional babysitter.
This presentation will feature over one hundred slides of the two artists’ inspirations and outcomes including paintings, textiles, and working processes.
Sunday, February 1 – Knitting the Persian Poppy
2 sessions – 9 am – noon & 2 – 5 pm
When I experiment with a simple idea over and over and over again I stop obsessing about getting it “right” and just have fun playing.
For me, that is an ideal state of creativity.
Experimentation – play – exploration.
THAT is when things get juicy!
A simple structure and set of guidelines and techniques help set the stage, a place from which to kick off and DO.
Knitting Kaffe Fassett’s Persian Poppy is mesmerizing, deeply meditative, rhythmic and (after the first repeat or two) effortless.
I learned how to knit with two colors (and more!) from my uncle Kaffe.
Now I’d love to teach YOU!

In this two-part one-day workshop, we’ll explore one of Kaffe Fassett’s most popular surface patterns, the Persian Poppy. (read full class description)
