I love making small paintings! It is SO fun to explore an idea in a series. A simple shift of tone in a shadow can alter the mood of a still life, while adding a hint of pink to a cloud mass in the sky can suggest dawn or dusk in a landscape. I often find myself painting an idea obsessively, chasing the perfect combination of color, shape, and composition. It’s a way for me to get to know a new subject, and a new scene. I love seeing how my collectors group these babies together, three apples all in a row, say, or set them on a guest room side-table or kitchen window-sill adding color and brightness to the ordinary places we spend most of our time.
My favorite place to display these works is on a book-shelf, a surprise that draws the eye, and takes up no wall space at all. As we move deeper into the colder and shorter days of winter, I find myself reaching more and more for spots of color to lift my spirits, rearranging bookshelves, placing bowls of fruit on tables, moving art around on the walls.
